In Vitro Fertilization( IVF)

The knowledge of in vitro fertilization( IVF).

What is in vitro fertilization( IVF)?

The procedure of IVF

1. Take fertility medication to stimulate the production of eggs.

2. Retrieve eggs and semen.

3. Combine eggs with sperm manually.

Transfer an embryo into the woman’s uterus.

IVF is known as external fertilization. IVF-ET is to retrieve eggs and sperm artificially, combine them in a laboratory dish, and then an embryo is transferred into the woman’s uterus.

In order to enhance the opportunity of being fertilized, the fertilization medication is prescribed to stimulate the production of eggs, and ultrasound scans and blood tests are performed to monitor the growth of eggs in order to determine when to manually retrieve eggs. After obtaining semen, researchers will pick the best sperm in a lab and combine the egg and sperm manually. After 3 to 6 days of fertilization, an embryo will be transferred into the woman’s uterus or preserved in the freezer.

Three Kinds of External Fertilization

1. IVF — It’s the first IVF-ET. Eggs and sperm are put in lab dishes, that is, conventional in vitro fertilization, to make them naturally combine.

2. ICSI — Unlike IVF, which makes eggs and sperm naturally combine, ICSI is done under the microscope. The procedure is to use a needle to penetrate a single sperm into an egg, which is to force the egg and sperm to be fertilized.

3. PGS/PGD — Based on the technique of ICSI, it’s to remove 1 to 5 cells for the genetic diagnosis when the embryo develops at the 4th to 8th cell stage. This way is to make sure your embryo does not suffer from any family medical history.

The latest technique might not be suitable for every couple.
